Personal statement on public communication

I believe that researchers have an obligation to communicate their research to the public.

Minimally this entails answering reasonable questions from interested individuals. I will always seek to respond to all correspondence provided that is in good faith. (I will not respond to publisher spam, requests to validate fringe theories, etc).

On the whole, I stand by what I have committed to publish and I make my publications available in open repositories, so I will tend to refer public questions to individual papers where my stated position can be discovered.

I will issue media releases for research that I consider to be significant, and I will usually agree to be interviewed for radio, podcasts or for comment in print/digital media as long as I can verify the integrity of the media source.

Every so often I will submit text for publication to similar media organisations. I will not commit to contributions for commercial publications unless I can see a clear public communication benefit (as opposed to merely increasing the commercial value of the publication).
